I am scheduled for an abortion, what should I do?

You should consult with your physician and your health plan will comply with current local and state laws.

Can I pay out of pocket for an abortion?

Paying out of pocket is always an option for any service if facility accepts cash pay patients.

Can I use telehealth to talk to a doctor outside of my state who can prescribe abortion medications?

Coverage will be based on the state where the member is located at the time of service, not where the doctor is located.

I have Affordable Care Act (ACA), Medicare, or Medicaid health insurance coverage through Highmark, will abortions be covered for me?

By law, federally funded insurance plans are not permitted to cover abortions. Because ACA, Medicare, and Medicaid are federally funded, abortions will not be covered except for the following scenarios:

  • If the pregnancy is the result of an act of rape or incest; or
  • In the case where a woman suffers from a physical disorder, physical injury, or physical illness, including a life-endangering physical condition caused by or arising from the pregnancy itself, that would, as certified by a physician, place the woman in danger of death unless an abortion is performed.
